How to get rid of the smell of cat urine in the apartment?
Pets are not only a sea of pleasure, but also a lot of worries. It is not so difficult to remove the puddle behind your beloved cat, but this is only the beginning of the problem. How to get rid of the smell of cat urine in an apartment that tightly eats up in carpet, furniture, decoration and things? We have collected 9 effective ways!
1. Act immediately
Clean the puddle as soon as you notice, even if it’s not at the right time. The longer it remains uncleaned, the more the smell eats up and the sharper it becomes. It will be much more difficult to get rid of him then, and it only stimulates the cats to repeat the “feat”.
Wipe the puddle dry, but do not rub it on the surface, especially if it is a carpet. Use wet wipes and dry rags, but try not to increase the area of the disaster.
2. Means with enzymes
Enzymes are a special enzyme similar in composition to proteins. They stimulate the natural chemical processes that occur in the body. In your case, after drying, agents with enzymes can completely destroy the smell.
Read the compositions: it does not have to be specialized preparations from pet stores. Conventional household chemicals are sufficient, but use enzymes only if the stain has not been treated with any other substances before. Otherwise, the reaction can be unpredictable!
3. Special odor control products
Pet shops sell a ton of sprays, gels, and liquids to remove stains and odors from urine. The manufacturer always indicates the particular application and for which surfaces the composition is suitable. But do not forget that there is no magic pill for all ills. Even so, you will most likely have to process the apartment several times and combine different methods.
4. Dishwashing liquid
Take a teaspoon of your dishwashing liquid and dilute it in 100 ml of peroxide. Such a mixture removes odors well on its own, and even better - paired with soda. But first, test in an inconspicuous area to make sure that the peroxide does not spoil the color of the coating.
If the stain is fresh and the smell has not yet become too full, cover it with soda, wait about an hour and remove. But if the spot is already old, you have to cheat! In the same way, fill the area with soda, fields with normal hydrogen peroxide, leave it overnight - at least for 8 hours, and then wipe the surface with a wet rag or wash if it is a fabric or upholstered furniture.
In the process of manipulation, do not be alarmed when the smell intensifies. This is a temporary effect of ammonia evolution due to a chemical reaction. It will quickly disappear.
This is a convenient option for carpets, sofas, mattresses and various floor coverings. Dilute vinegar with water 1: 3 and pour into a spray bottle, treat the surface and wait until it is completely dry, and then sprinkle a little soda on top - it neutralizes the smell of vinegar itself. You don’t need water - wipe the soda with a dry sponge or brush.
7. Alcohol or vodka
Alcohol not only removes odors, but also kills bacteria. This is the best household antiseptic. You only need a moistened sponge, you do not need to dilute vodka in water or interfere with other components. The characteristic alcoholic smell will soon disappear by itself. Almost any surface can be treated with alcohol.
8. Citric acid
Lemon juice or dry acid sachets deal well with stains and odors. Not for nothing that the majority of household fresheners and chemicals are all variants of “citrus freshness”. Another plus is that cats do not like lemon flavor and zest. Therefore, this treatment will additionally scare the pet away from a favorite place.
9. Remove the smell of cat urine from shoes and clothes
Soak your clothes in hot water with soda, and then wash them thoroughly in an air conditioner or rinse aid. It’s more difficult with shoes: try to gently wash them with laundry soap and dry them. And if you are afraid to spoil things, turn to dry cleaning - they have professional tools for any materials and problems.
